Bugville DVD from Fleischer Studios 1941Bugville, also known as “Hoppity Goes to Town”, is a great classic cartoon from Fleischer Studios and it is now available on DVD. It has all of the imagination, color and fluidity of classic 2D animation that we love at Dimples. We’ve moved it to the top of our Netflix queue but it is also available at a great price from Amazon through the link in this post. On Netflix, Bugville is listed in the New Release section under Classics. Hopefully, more of the late Fleischer brother’s animation will be released on DVD.

September 5, 2007 · Filed Under Animation News, Film Festivals, Flash Animation · Comments Off on Australian International Animation Festival September 14-15

Australian International Animation Festival All folks in one of the most wonderful spots on this planet, Australia, listen up. You’re in for a treat next week as the Australian International Animation Festival comes to Southern Cross University, Lismore, September 14-15. From the Northern Rivers Echo News:

The films have been sourced from American, European and Asian festivals and with 17 sessions over two days, including a special schools program next Friday, September 14, there’s sure to be something for everyone.

Meanwhile, a master class on Saturday, September 15, will see one of Australia’s most accomplished animators/directors, Tim Adlide, give the low down on how to bring your animation to life – whether you’re working with flash cartoons, motion graphics, stop motion or 3-D CGI.

Dimples wants to call attention to Tim Adlide‘s forum which will be fantastic. He’s fantastic and he’s a hero to more than one of the Dimple’s team. He creates wonderful characters. Tim is giving a “master class” in creating flow effects in Flash at 3:10 pm on September 15. Don’t miss it. From the AIAF website:

Tim who will demonstrate the creation of “flow” effects for simulating wind, water and/or cloth waves using Flash. This is an advanced class for the adult audience already familiar with Flash.

Dimples sure wishes they could hop on a magic bus and be there, but, alas, we can’t. We’d love to hear from anyone who is able to attend this event.

2D Flash Animated Skunk Fu Coming to WB Kids

August 22, 2007 · Filed Under Animation Coming Attractions, Animation News, Animation Studios · Comments Off on 2D Flash Animated Skunk Fu Coming to WB Kids

Skunk FuSkunk Fu, an animated cartoon previously available in the UK and Australia, is coming to the Saturday morning cartoon segment on The CW network known as the “Kids WB!”.

Skunk Fu is 2D flash animation from Cartoon Saloon. The basic story is:

Dragon and his Ninja Monkeys will stop at nothing to destroy the Valley Animals.

But wise old Master Panda believes that the answer to their prayers rests in the tiny paws (and smelly butt) of his young student – Skunk!

Panda trains Skunk in the art of Kung Fu. Besides Dragon, Skunk’s biggest enemy is his own impatience; he’d rather go on adventures than do boring old training.

Only time will tell if he’s ready…

The folks at Cartoon Saloon have also created a blog for Skunk Fu. You can see a number of stills from the series on the blog.

More Classic 2D Animation from John Lasseter and Disney

March 12, 2007 · Filed Under Animation Coming Attractions, Animation News · 3 Comments

Disney continues the return to 2D hand-drawn animation under John Lasseter. Neither Disney suit Execs nor Lasseter have provided the reason for the full steam ahead return to traditional animation by the southern California arm of the company but Dimples is happy to see the trend continue. From FilmStew.com:

Chief Creative Officer and Walt Disney Feature Animation boss John Lasseter had an unveiling for Disney stockholders this week as they met in New Orleans. The shareholders got a first look at preliminary work on The Frog Princess, a return to traditional animation whose main character is not the typical Disney heroine. The film will be a musical comedy set in New Orleans and will be centered on a character that the execs call ‘The Newest Disney Princess’, a young African American girl named Maddy, who will be joining the studio’s franchise line of Disney princesses. The movie will be directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, directors of Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and Hercules. Those animators left the Disney fold several years ago, as the studio was turning away from 2-D traditional animation. But one of John Lasseter’s earliest acts as the new head of Disney Animation was to lure them back. Look for the film’s release in 2009, at which time you can enjoy the score by Randy Newman.
